Introduction from the PDM

Welcome to the website of the Uttlesford School Sport Partnership.

Graham Jones, Partnership Development Manager

USSP was established in 2006 a year that saw the programme become truly national. The scheme piloted in 2000 as an Excellence in Cities project aimed at improving children's performance in schools through an enhanced PE programme. The scheme was initially funded by The Lottery but as the pilot schemes produced positive results so the government were persuaded to fund the scheme and to roll out the programme nationally. This they did and by 2006 there were 450 school sport partnerships across the country.

In Uttlesford the SSP is hosted by Saffron Walden County High School where the Partnership Development Manager is supported by six School Sport Coordinators. These SSCo's are PE teachers who are released to work 2 days a week with their family of schools. In total 36 schools are involved in USSP including all state primary & secondary schools in the district. Each primary school appoints a Primary Link Teacher (PLT) as the subject leader for PE and they in turn work closely with their SSCo.

The Government's Target

To increase the percentage of 5-16 year olds, accessing a minimum of high quality PE and School Sport to 75% in 2006 and 85% by 2008.
(An indication of the success of the programme is that by 2008 90% of children were accessing 2 hours a week PE while in Uttlesford this figure was 93%)
