Talent Development
Providing for Talented performers is one strand in the Physical Education, Young People & School Sport (PESSYP) strategy. This strategy designed by the Youth Sport Trust is delivered by each School Sport Partnership.
The strategy has three main elements:
- Talent Pathways
- Talent Support
- National Competition Framework
Uttlesford School Sport Partnership is fully involved in this strategy and delivers the programme in the following ways:
Talent Pathways
1. Multi Skill Clubs. As part of an initiative funded by the Lottery USSP provided training and equipment so that schools could set up their own Multi Skill Clubs. (21 schools bought into the programme)
2. Multi Skill Camps. Each year USSP runs two Camps one for children in Yr 6 and another for children in Yr 2
- Multi Skill Talent Camp. The Camp provides the opportunity for talented pupils to experience a range of activities designed to challenge them in a variety of settings. Each year 36 Yr 6 pupils from across the partnership are invited to the camp which is held at SWCHS. (Trials for the camp are held in each family with pupils initially being nominated by their class teacher) This year's dates are 26th - 29th May
- Gym & Dance Camp. This Camp also held at SWCHS aims to provide stimulus and encouragement to young children in Yr 2. Children will be invited following discussion between the child's class teacher and their School Sport Coordinator. This Camp takes place during the second half of the summer term and dates will be announced soon.
3. Multi Sport Academies. In June, following the Multi Skill talent camp all children who were originally asked to attend their family trials will be invited to attend an academy which will be held at 'their' secondary school. The focus will change to Multi Sport and will serve as an introduction to the secondary school's PE Department and an opportunity for some of the more able children in Year 6 to work and play together.
4. National Talent Orientation Camp
- Provide an opportunity for the most able to attend a national gathering of able children drawn from a wide range of backgrounds. Children will be nominated following the annual camp. The camp acts as a focus for able children who may have been overlooked perhaps through lack of provision in their local area
5. UK School Games. Aim to provide an atmosphere of competition similar in intensity to that of an Olympic or Commonwealth Games. This years Games was held at Bristol and Bath, next year Wales will act as hosts.
Talent Support
- Junior Athlete Education programmes. All SSCo's are trained JAE mentors. They have devised a programme of support for the most able children in their school to receive mentoring
National Competition Framework
- This framework drawn up by UK Sport in conjunction with sport National Governing Bodies aims to encourage competition at the right level. Paying attention to the needs of Long Term Athlete Development it promotes competition throughout a person's active life. The programme in schools is promoted by the Competition Manager
